CORBELL THE JOKE AS PRISONER LAUGHS AT WRONGFULL RELEASE

Simon Corbell again hid late last week while a department official delivered news of further mismanagement at the AMC - this time the wrongful release of a convicted prisoner. Simon Corbell must immediately clarify if, in the words of the prisoner:

“Anyone else could have, murderers, bad armed robbers, they all could have got out, it was that easy”. (Win News 30 April 2010)

The vision of the prisoner laughing at his wrongful release makes a mockery of Simon Corbell and of his competence as a Minister, Jeremy Hanson, Shadow Corrections Minister said.

“The wrongful release of a prisoner by ACT Corrections is another inexcusable mistake in a series of blunders which have eroded the credibility of the Attorney General.

“This latest blunder at the AMC is on the back of recent roof top protests by prisoners, revelations that corrections officers allowed the protest to occur, serious complaints by staff and the union, and concerns raised by the judiciary following allegations of rape and cruelty at the jail.

“Simon Corbell was front and centre in the media during the sham opening of the prison on the eve of the 2008 election, but has become evasive when it comes to taking the responsibility for dealing with the ongoing blunders at the prison.

“It is quite clear to the entire community, including prisoners who are openly laughing at the situation, that Simon Corbell is incapable of properly managing the corrections portfolio. It seems it is now only a matter of time before a serious incident leads to injury.

“Simon Corbell must immediately outline what mistakes have been made that resulted in a prisoner being wrongfully released and assure the community that procedures are in place to ensure that it will not happen again,” Mr Hanson concluded.
