LIBS TO INTRODUCE INDEPENDENT EDUCATION

COMMISSIONER

  • EDUCATION COMMISSIONER TO GIVE PARENTS SOMEWHERE TO GO

ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja and ACT Shadow Education Minister Steve Doszpot announced today that if elected, a Canberra Liberals Government will establish an independent Education Commissioner. Mr Seselja said the Commissioner will be able to give parents independent advice on decisions taken by school officials about issues such as bullying, victimisation, school enrolments, notification of rights, privacy, and disability support.

“While the Canberra Liberals wholeheartedly believe in the autonomy of schools, an Education Commissioner would provide an independent dispute-resolution approach on issues that can’t be resolved within the school,” Mr Seselja said.

“Currently, parents don’t have many options to lodge concerns or appeals against school decisions, and the Canberra Liberals want to give them an independent alternative.

“The Commissioner would also provide feedback to schools to encourage consistent decision making, and would provide independent advice to the Minister for Education.

“The role would become part of the Human Rights Commission, and we would give the Commission extra resources to take on this responsibility,” Mr Seselja concluded.

Mr Doszpot said the plan will give parents and students a transparent way to discuss issues such as bullying and victimisation.

“Bullying in schools is an issue that we take seriously and an Independent Commissioner would ensure parents and students are being fairly heard,” Mr Doszpot said.

“Our policy will bring greater fairness to sensitive issues and improve confidence in the ACT’s school system.”
